Jyotsna cannot remember a time when she was not involved in sport. She used to play basketball at school and even then knew that she wanted to pursue fitness as a career. However, she wanted to gain proper qualifications before ploughing ahead. And that would have meant some serious investment. So Jyotsna put her plans on hold and worked in the IT field for 9 years while pursuing her qualification all the time.
Three and a half years ago, she set up the Unit offering workout classes for a small band of friends. It has grown steadily since and these days, Jyotsna offers nearly 30 hours of supervised exercise classes across the week. All of her clients come to her through word-of-mouth referrals and she has built up a loyal clientele.
I attended a weights training session conducted in the open garden area of a private property right in the heart of the city. Though it is an accesible and good-sized space, Jyotsna and her team are at the mercy of the weather. They have to shift indoors during the monsoons.
Eventually, Jyotsna would like to move into their own, bespoke fitness studio. But for now she wants to keep her classes small and their quality high. If the wobble in my legs after the workout is anything to go by, then Jyotsna’s offering is definitely of a very high standard.
